Simplify the Teaching of Writing- Chapter 1
There's no doubt, as a whole, that students are much more motivated and successful when they are writing for authentic purposes. However, there are those students that sometimes still struggle to "buy into" the authenticity of a project. One of my top readers and student as a whole this year, is one of my weakest writers. If this book does nothing else for me, I hope that it will help me to help this student enjoy writing as opposed to him viewing writing as something to "get done" with the smallest amount of effort possible. I also hope that it will help me grow both as a writer and a teacher of writing. As I read through this chapter and took a look at my beliefs and practices, I came to the conclusion that my students do writing every day in various ways, but that I need to improve on modeling and giving them feedback on their writing. I also like the idea that less can be more; simplify the process and raise the expectations. I was so able to identify with the example of being overwhelmed when we have so many thoughts and ideas yet, we're suppose to create something on a big, blank sheet of paper. I think the author summed it up well, "It takes enormous energy, courage, confidence and skill, not to mention a positive attitude."

Keep reading. As the newest 3rd grade teacher on the block, I saw how much all of you wanted to make writing more purposeful. Our little notebook started it but this book will start to guide your writing with purpose. It's got the exact direction we've been looking for together.
Bernetta,
I too have had excellent readers who struggled with the writing process. For some students organizing their thoughts is a real struggle. In these situations, I believe that some kind of writing organizer is needed to help them get started. I have found that these kiddos need to be writing on a daily basis choosing their own topics. This seems to build their confidence. One of the most valuable stimulants is validation from their peers. That seems to be a great motivator. I had a student today who wrote a great piece. I asked her if she wanted to share it with the class. She declined, but she wanted me to do it. I did and her classmates were in awe! I know she will never forget that moment, and I also know she left school today confident and excited about her writing ability. A few minutes of celebration meant everything! could share it with the and the sharing process and validation on self selected topics.
Bernetta,
Just wait until you get to chapter seven. I am getting the big picture now. Also, this book has some excellent examples to use in the classroom. Be sure and try the secret life of...story. I did and it was one of the best writing activities I've done this year. Have fun!
Reading further on in this book has really helped me see how I can help that struggling student.
